First record of Magnificent Frigatebird Fregata magnificens for Senegal

216-218

On 29 April 2017, we decided to visit Îles de la Madeleine National Park, c.2 km off Dakar, Senegal (14°39’15”N 17°28’16”W) in order to check the Brown Boobies Sula leucogaster seen there on several occasions during the preceding months, on the rocky cliffs on one of the islands. About halfway during the crossing to the islands, we noticed a large, dark and long-tailed bird with long wings flying high above us. After watching it through binoculars, it was clear that it was a frigatebird Fregata sp., a genus that had not been recorded in Senegal previously. We attempted to obtain good views and photographs, as we were aware that specific identification of frigatebirds can be challenging.
