First record of Hartlaub’s Gull Chroicocephalus hartlaubii for Mozambique

223-224

On 26 December 2017 at c.14:00 hrs, whilst waiting for a ferry to Inhaca Island at the Porto da Pesca in Maputo, Mozambique (25°58’35”S 32°34’15”E), MC noticed a group of 8–10 gulls on the roof of a shed just south of the fishing wharf. Most were Grey-headed Gulls Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus of different ages, but one appeared slightly, but conspicuously, smaller. On closer examination it showed a uniformly dark bill, dark eye, and plain face with limited smudging on the head. The weather was overcast, with light rain and moderate winds of c.15– 20 knots.
