p 88-89

On the breeding of Western Reef Heron Egretta gularis in Tunisia. A mixed pair comprising a dark-morph Western Reef Heron Egretta g. gularis x Little Egret E. garzetta bred in 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2002, in a colony of Little Egrets in the saltmarshes of Thyna / Sfax, Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia. In 1993 four young were raised, in 1996 and 1998 the eggs were predated by Yellow-legged Gulls Lams (cachinnans) michahellis, and in 2002 the Western Reef Heron was killed by a hailstorm while incubating. These are the first breeding records of Western Reef Heron in Tunisia and in north-western Africa.
